Matthew Barksdale, the president of Engage Mobile, spoke to students at Rockhurst University this week. Barksdale, a graduate of the Rockhurst Executive MBA Program, spoke to MBA student enrolled in the course “Managing Small Business Growth.”
The course’s instructor, Peter Florzak, is an Adjunct Professor at Rockhurst and has a had a very successful and diverse career. Florzak has held senior executive roles in areas as diverse or product development, real-estate and banking. He is focused on providing his students a real-world perspective of what is required to successfully start and run a business.
Barksdale is a 20 year veteran of managing small and medium-sized businesses. After getting his undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of Business, he has had the opportunity to own and run companies in industries ranging from manufacturing to B2B Media to PR to technology. According to Matthew, “The road has has not always been smooth and I have earned every gray hair in my head but the learnings have equipped me to succeed.”
Barksdale spoke to the class about many of the ups and downs of running and growing businesses – from hitting payroll to bank covenants to picking the right team and partners.
One of the biggest take-aways was that the journey of growing a business can be rocky – but the learnings during the process are critical – Barksdale said, “Engage Mobile would not be as successful as it is today without all of the experiences – both positive and negative – I had earlier in my career.”
